Xavi retires from international football

The Daily Mail - Spain legend Xavi has confirmed he will step down from international duty to concentrate on club football, and said he hopes to be welcoming new team-mate Luis Suarez to Barcelona sooner rather than later.

After over 100 games for the national team winning two European Championships and a World Cup the midfielder, widely recognised as the country’s greatest ever player, said: 'I leave the Spain team a very happy man and I desire them all the best.'

Take a second to pour one out for Xavi tonight. The most important player in Spanish football history, and the driving force behind two of the most dominant teams in the history of the sport. Guardiola's dream team and the Spain team from 2008-2012 wouldn't be anywhere without the chameleon-eyed genius, to quote Ray Hudson. He defined their styles, and will forever remain the physical embodiment of the tiki-taka style. Undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation.

Luckily we'll still get to see him play for Barcelona for at least one more year, hopefully more. A more relaxed role will allow him to rest more often, which hopefully mean that when he does come on he'll be much sharper and less tired than he's looked the past two seasons. Either way, make a point to watch him in action while you still can.
