During Saturday's penalty shootout with Chile, the Brazilian defender was apparently so lacking in confidence he asked coach Luiz Felipe Scolari if he could be selected last to take his penalty; behind even goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
"Hitting a penalty is a big responsibility at home and I asked God not to be selected," said Silva. "I missed two of my last three and Scolari asked me to be the sixth. I said no, I asked to be last on the list, behind Julio Cesar."
Well that's the kind of big confidence boost you need from your captain right before penalty kicks at the World Cup. The eyes of millions are on you, you're on the brink of elimination, and in front of tens of thousands of rabid fan. You're feeling nervous, but at least you can look up to your fearless captain, right? NOPE! He's peeing his pants and begging the coach not to let him take a penalty kick. He can't handle the responsibility of putting the team on his back when they need him most, except oh wait isn't that exactly what a captain is supposed to do?
I expected better from Thiago Silva honestly, although having thought about it the Brazilian players responsible for fucking up this World Cup probably has about 48 hours before his family starts getting picked off by pissed off Brazilian fans. Might just be a savvy veteran play by Silva to play it safe and pass the blame to someone else for when Brazil eventually does get knocked out.
