People have known that FIFA was corrupt forever, but this was never going to happen until it was a more mainstream issue. Its all well and good to bribe and smuggle millions of dollars across international boarders to ensure the oil rich magnates get their wishes and sweep that under the rug as long as only soccer fans know the deal, but once news stations start reporting it and John Oliver rips you to shreds over it, then you have to change something about it.
This is honestly pretty exciting. 94 really isn't that long ago in terms of World Cups considering there are tons of other soccer-crazy countries that haven't had a World Cup in much longer, but soccer is already 100x more popular now than it was back then, and if the trend continues soccer could legitimately be a big sport in American culture by the time 2022 rolls around. More than that- the team might actually be good enough in 8 years time to use the home field advantage to make a serious run. For now nothings official, but still, exciting times for soccer lovers in the states.
p.s. ride on coattails much? Get the fuck out of here, your team hasn't won a game since October 2012 and likely won't until at least 2022. If the maple leafs get an automatic bid it would be an absolute JOKE.
