(Landon Donovan: World's biggest Belgium fan)
LA Times
Landon Donovan is going be honest here. He is going to be brutally honest. He knows this isn't going to sound good, but the last few weeks have reminded him that only by mining the darkest moments can one discover his light.
Donovan is admitting that shortly after he was cut from the U.S. men's World Cup team, he briefly rooted against them.
Wait, what? You mean the man with 0 screen presence and no charisma actually thought that we were all under the impression that he was passionately rooting for the US team to do well at the World Cup? Get outta town. Like yeah obviously it has to look like he doesn't mind how well the team is doing when he's on ESPN, but Landon didn't think he was really fooling anybody did he? He looks MISERABLE every time he gets tossed on screen for an interview, and you can physically see his hairline recede another centimeter with every goal the US team scores. He's hating every second of this World Cup as long as the US is still involved in it.
The ridiculous charade ESPN is putting on where the anchors pretend Donovan is cheering for the red, white & blue in their games is laughable. A much better use of time and energy would be a live cam to Donovan's apartment so the national audience can check up on him as he cries himself to sleep with every point the US picks up against their opposition. Just give us a few minutes after every game to rub in his face how well the US is doing without him and watch him collapse into a shell of the man he once was. A little theater never hurt anybody, ESPN should know that better than most.
